i recently had the pleasure of traveling to kentucky to shoot anthony davis for the cover of the latest issue of slam magazine. after leading the kentucky wildcats to a ncaa national championship earlier this year, davis undoubtably secured his spot as the #1 pick in the upcoming nba draft.
this particular shoot presented some interesting obstacles. because of timing, availabilities, schedules, deadlines & many other factors, we actually had to shoot the cover of anthony in his future team’s jersey, 5 days before the nba lottery even took place. in doing so, to cover all possible outcomes of the draft, i had the unique opportunity to photograph anthony in the jerserys of every team that was in the lottery. 3 hours & a lot of wardrobe changes later (not to mention several embarrassing attempts to shoot a jumper over anthony), everyone involved was packing up their things & heading to the airport.
a few days later i found myself sitting in a random bar in houston, tx (where i was shooting another upcoming story for slam) staring up @ the tv, anxiously awaiting the lottery pick announcements. w/ my laptop out & ready to upload the final images of whatever team got the #1 pick, as soon as it was announced. i have to be honest… as a basketball fan, i personally couldn’t have cared less who got the 1st pick. but as a photographer, i was keeping my fingers crossed that new orleans would come out on top. they were by far my favorite images from the shoot. i am very happy that everything seemed to fall into place. from my perspective @ least…
thank you ben & melissa @ slam, maurice for writing a great piece & anthony for all of your time & patience w/ me throughout the shoot. true pleasure.
